Gait Analysis and Biomechanics

Cortex motion capture software allows industry professionals to conduct accurate gait analysis to observe running and walking biomechanics. With GaitTrak, our gait analysis application, you can generate a complete kinematic report of the lower extremities. If force plates are used, you can also receive kinetics measures as well as the body’s center of mass location and velocities. Whether you’re a medical professional, a product designer, or a sports biomechanics specialist, the gait analysis and biomechanics application in Cortex will help you perform more accurate tracking and measurements of your subjects. What is Gait Analysis?

Gait analysis is a systematic way to look at the running and walking biomechanics of a subject. Using low-latency cameras and motion capture software, evaluators are able to slow down the videos to look at the subject’s mechanics frame by frame. They can look at each joint during each phase in the gait cycle to see if there are any irregularities or areas of concern. Simple things like a longer than normal stride can cause a range of problems, including hamstring pain or plantar fasciitis. Looking at the small motions separately and as a whole can help evaluators identify problematic movement patterns and more accurate diagnoses of underlying pathologies.

Gait analysis and biomechanics can be used in chiropractic and osteopathic professions, as gait issues can indicate issues with the pelvis or sacrum. Additionally, comparative gait analysis can be conducted on non-human animals, allowing evaluators to have a greater understanding of the biomechanics of a specific species or locomotion as a whole. This can be used in a wide range of research and educational purposes. Comparative measurements can also be used in sports biomechanics to compare the performance of one athlete to another.

GaitTrak provides an easy, simplified way to measure your subject’s gait and generate a report prepared for Microsoft Excel. You only need to enter the trials to be calculated, the subject’s information, and the events that you’d like to measure.
