Computer animation is the most widely recognized use for MoCap software, but it's a powerful tool for a wide range of industries. Motion capture software is used in:
- Entertainment - creating life-like characters for video games, movies, and broadcast
- Movement Analysis - including sports performance, biomechanics, clinical gait analysis, research, and education
- Industrial - ergonomics research, product development, military training, virtual reality and augmented reality simulations
How does Motion Capture Work?
Motion capture uses cameras to track the subtle movements of a subject wearing mocap markers. The data is then transferred to a computer equipped with the mocap software. The software processes the data and creates a virtual skeleton that moves with the subject in real-time. For entertainment applications, this allows the director and production team to see a rough animated version of the actor's performance. In sports applications, coaches can evaluate a player's form, equipment angles, kinetics, and kinematics. Medical professionals can track and measure a subject's gait to develop treatment plans and physical therapy.
Ford Motor Company utilized our mocap system to evaluate the ergonomics of their production line. They were able to identify and correct several key issues that led to repetitive, stress-related injuries. Since implementing those changes, stress-related injuries like rotator cuff tears, strains, and spinal compression significantly decreased. Additionally, the quality of new vehicles increased to five times the national average as workers experienced fewer injuries, pain, and better health. Cortex includes integrated tools and additional modules for use in any application. We also offer high-quality, low latency mocap cameras and markers. BaSix, our latest line of markers, are suit-less full-body active markers featuring configurable LED arrays that can be fitted onto a subject in under 60 seconds.
